The Croatian government, led by veteran affairs minister Tomo Medved and labour minister Alen Ružić, has drafted amendments to the Law on Croatian veterans and the law governing pension rights for military, police and other authorised officials. The reforms will abolish the pension reduction of 8‑20 % that was introduced in 2002 and introduce a new supplement of €3 for each month served in the combat sector and €0.5 for each month in the non‑combat sector. The lowest veteran pension will be raised for about 68,908 beneficiaries, and a total of roughly 104,560 veterans will receive the combat‑sector supplement. Overall more than 200,000 veterans, police and other officials – 201,304 people, or over 70 % of all pensioners in the group – will see higher pensions when the changes take effect on 1 January 2027. The first‑year cost is estimated at €88.5 million, which the government plans to record as part of NATO defence‑related spending. A separate increase in caregiver allowances of €543 gross per month is also included.
