Croatia: Veterans' associations seek new social roles

Discussions are emerging regarding the evolving social role of Croatian veterans more than three decades after the end of the Homeland War. The association ‘Branitelji zajedno’ has initiated a dialogue on how veterans' organizations can transition from traditional commemorative roles—such as wreath-laying and anniversaries—to broader social engagement.

As many veterans age and face health or social challenges, there is a push to utilize their organizational experience and life expertise to address modern community issues. Proposed roles include providing advisory support to families, participating in environmental protection, volunteering, and fostering intergenerational dialogue through educational workshops and youth engagement.

Concurrently, there is criticism regarding the public presence and political influence of high-ranking retired generals. Observers note a perceived silence from military leadership compared to previous decades, citing instances where prominent figures were criticized for prioritizing personal comfort or specific political petitions over advocating for the broader, often disenfranchised, veteran community.
