Croatia: War crime allegations and missing persons updates
The Documentation and Information Center (DIC) Veritas has reported that 33 years after the attack on Mirlović Polje, no one has been prosecuted for the killing of seven Serbian civilians. The group, identified as the Ninth Battalion ‘Rafael vitez Boban’ of the Croatian forces, allegedly carried out the attack while the area was under UNPROFOR protection. Veritas claims that despite documentation provided to authorities, the case remains open against unknown perpetrators.
Separately, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković addressed the government regarding the search for missing persons from the Homeland War. He stated that since 2016, 444 locations have been investigated, resulting in the discovery of seven mass graves and 46 individual graves, with 343 people identified. Plenković also highlighted the completion of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, noting that Croatia secured approximately 10 billion euros in EU funds for various infrastructure and social projects.
