Croatia warns of food security risks amid declining production

At the ‘From Field to Sea’ conference in Dubrovnik, Croatian officials and EU representatives discussed the growing link between food security and national security. The discussions highlighted critical challenges facing the agricultural and fishing sectors, including declining production, labor shortages, insufficient infrastructure, and an increasing reliance on imports.

Marijana Petir, Chair of the Croatian Parliament’s Agriculture Committee, emphasized the need for a policy shift to prevent the loss of added value caused by exporting raw materials while importing finished products. She advocated for shorter supply chains to ensure domestic food availability during geopolitical or climate crises.

The Agriculture Committee has proposed recognizing strategic agricultural, food, and fisheries infrastructure as critical infrastructure. This designation would allow investments in production, processing, storage, and logistics to be funded through national security budgets, similar to how NATO allies allocate funds for critical infrastructure and civil preparedness.
