Croatia issues fines to youths missing military medical exams
Following the reintroduction of mandatory military service in Croatia, several young men, including high school students, have faced legal proceedings for failing to appear for required medical and psychological examinations.
According to the Ministry of Defence, approximately 16,000 individuals received summons for these examinations, resulting in 57 indictments and 19 concluded cases. Courts in Čakovec, Zagreb, and Virovitica have issued various rulings. Fines have ranged from 120 to 500 euros, often lower than the statutory minimum of 500 to 5,000 euros, as judges considered mitigating factors such as the defendants' lack of prior criminal records and financial status.
In some instances, defendants were acquitted because they could not be proven to have received the summons personally. For example, a court in Varaždin cleared a young man who was working in Germany at the time of delivery. If fines are not paid, the state utilizes FINA for compulsory collection, which can lead to imprisonment in certain cases.
