Croatian Bishops' Conference discusses abuse prevention protocols
During a new season premiere of the program ‘Argumenti’ on Croatian Catholic Radio, representatives discussed institutional responsibility and protection regarding abuse within the Church.
Ilija Dogan, deputy general secretary of the Croatian Bishops' Conference (HBK) and church lawyer, addressed a specific case involving a priest from the Diocese of Požega. Dogan confirmed that the priest was relieved of his duties at the HBK offices following the withdrawal of consent from the diocesan bishop. He noted that the HBK acted within its jurisdiction, as the diocesan bishop and the Holy See's Dicastery are the primary authorities in such procedures.
Dogan outlined the protocols for handling reports of abuse involving minors or vulnerable adults. The HBK National Office's primary obligations include providing assistance to the victim, such as hearing their testimony and offering guidance toward professional trauma support. Additionally, reports must be forwarded to the relevant ecclesiastical authorities, such as the diocesan bishop, and victims should be informed of their right to report incidents to state authorities.
