Croatian cat rescue efforts and new study show benefits of indoor living

Mandica Tomašević, a retired resident of Osijek, founded the "Mandica's Association" ten years ago to rescue stray cats. The charity now cares for hundreds of felines, providing veterinary treatment, a small on‑site clinic, spaying, and temporary or permanent homes. Volunteers stress the importance of socialising adult cats and reducing stray populations through sterilisation.

A separate study conducted in New Zealand tracked 87 cat owners who moved their pets indoors. More than 40% of cats adapted immediately, another 8% within days, and 17% over weeks. Dr. Julia Henning said the findings “challenge the notion that cats cannot adapt to indoor‑only life,” noting that younger cats adjust faster. Owners reported increased safety and reduced anxiety, while also noting practical challenges such as litter‑box maintenance and diet costs.
