Croatian Chamber of Agriculture proposes five large wheat silos in Slavonia
The Croatian Chamber of Agriculture (HPK) has presented a strategic document titled ‘Vision of Croatian Agriculture – Wheat as the First Major Example’ to modernize the sector. The proposal focuses on consolidating farmers into production organizations with a minimum of 4,000 hectares to increase market competitiveness and reduce input costs.
A central component of the plan is the construction of five large production centers across the Slavonian counties of Brod-Posavina, Osijek-Baranja, Požega-Slavonia, Virovitica-Podravina, and Vukovar-Srijem. Each center would feature a silo with a 50,000-ton wheat capacity, totaling 250,000 tons of storage space.
Estimated costs for a single 50,000-ton silo range from 6 to 8 million euros. The project proposes a financing model where 65 percent of the costs are covered by EU funds, with the remainder provided by the participating producers. The initiative also suggests using warehouse receipts as a financial instrument and involving state commodity reserves to lease portions of the silos.
