Croatian coastal towns restore beach barriers after public protests

In the town of Lučica on the island of Vir, Zadar County authorities reversed a previous order and will reinstall a protective swimming‑zone fence after residents and tourists complained about safety concerns caused by its removal. The fence, which had been taken down on 19 June, will be put back over the weekend, allowing swimmers to use the beach while still permitting boat traffic.

Separately, the municipality of Župa dubrovačka in Dubrovnik‑Neretva County is pressing the developer of Kupari Luxury Hotels to open a pedestrian corridor through the Kupari construction site to the beach. Local officials argue the existing fence on Goričina blocks safe access for pedestrians and emergency services, and have called for a corrected barrier that ensures fire‑fighter access and safe passage for beachgoers.
