Croatian Defence Minister Ivan Anušić backs US call for Europe to boost defence spending
Croatian Defence Minister Ivan Anušić said in Brussels that he fully supports the United States' position that Europe must increase its own defence investment and reduce reliance on the US. Speaking at a NATO defence‑ministers meeting ahead of the NATO summit in Ankara (7‑8 July), Anušić highlighted that the war in Ukraine has shown the urgency of stronger European security.
He noted that Croatia already meets its NATO commitments, allocating at least 2 % of its GDP to defence, with 35 % of that earmarked for modernisation and capability upgrades. Anušić added that US warnings about a shift in American focus give Europe time to prepare, and he also participated in a defence contact group meeting supporting Ukraine.
