Croatian florists warn of illegal competition and rising costs
The Croatian Chamber of Crafts (HOK) has reported that florists are facing significant challenges due to rising operational costs and unfair competition. A primary concern is the illegal sale of flowers on streets, markets, and social media platforms, particularly ahead of All Saints' Day. These unregistered sellers avoid taxes, contributions, and other legal obligations, allowing them to offer lower prices that threaten the survival of registered businesses.
In addition to illegal trade, changes to the Trade Act are impacting artisans operating at cemeteries, shrines, and souvenir shops. These businesses rely heavily on sales during Sundays and holidays. The HOK continues to advocate for allowing family-run businesses to operate on Sundays when only the owner and family members are working, a proposal not included in recent amendments to the Crafts Act.
Regarding pricing, florists noted that the cost of floral arrangements is driven by the price of imported flowers, raw materials, transport, energy, and labor. While the government has permitted the sale of flowers, wreaths, candles, and lanterns on All Saints' Day, florists remain focused on the sustainability of legal business practices.
