Croatian gardeners urged to plant in July and control slugs

Gardeners in Croatia are being reminded that the slugs (fruit flies) have become a common pest damaging tomatoes, peppers, apples, pears, peaches and beans. Experts recommend manual removal of adults and egg clusters, washing the insects in soapy water, using protective nets or covers, and, if necessary, applying registered plant protection products according to label instructions. The focus is on low‑impact methods that protect beneficial insects such as bees.

At the same time, horticultural advisers suggest that July is still an ideal month for sowing a range of vegetables, fruits and ornamental plants. Recommended crops include beet, radishes, winter cabbage, coriander, blueberries, gooseberries and ornamental geraniums. Planting in warm, well‑drained soil with regular watering and partial shade during the hottest part of the day will help ensure a successful harvest later in the year.
