Croatia police investigate threats against journalists

Croatian authorities have launched a criminal investigation following a campaign of intimidation against journalists. The threats emerged after media coverage of Nazi and antisemitic chants by Torcida supporters in Split during a match between Hajduk and Ajax.

Reports indicate that social media posts identified 11 journalists and one political analyst, labeling them “12 horsemen of the Croatian apocalypse.” These posts included unsubstantiated claims of links to the Serbian intelligence agency (BIA). The intimidation escalated to include calls for the journalists’ liquidation, the publication of their photographs, and banners depicting hanged media professionals.

The Croatian Journalists' Association (HND) and the SafeJournalists network have demanded urgent state protection for the affected individuals. The HND also criticized Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, alleging that his public rhetoric contributes to a hostile environment for the press.

Interior Minister Davor Božinović stated that police are actively searching for suspects, noting that some individuals are currently in flight. While the Prime Minister expressed support for journalist safety, he also remarked that the coverage of the fan incidents was irresponsible.
