Croatia Interior Minister and Judges clash over Split incidents

Croatian Interior Minister Davor Božinović and the Association of Croatian Judges (UHS) are engaged in a public dispute following incidents involving the Torcida supporter group in Split. Božinović criticized the judiciary for slow processing of offenses, stating that many perpetrators are repeat offenders. He cited police data showing that out of 14 analyzed individuals, 11 had been reported for a total of 94 criminal offenses and 273 misdemeanors.

The UHS has responded by accusing the Minister of unilaterally shifting responsibility onto the courts without providing verifiable data. The association urged the Ministry of the Interior to present comprehensive information regarding police conduct and the specific points where delays occur, rather than making generalized assessments of judicial efficiency.

Božinović defended his comments, asserting that while judicial independence is unquestionable, the effectiveness of the legal system regarding citizen safety is a legitimate subject of public debate. He emphasized that the police remain transparent about their own mistakes, which grants them the credibility to discuss systemic issues.
