Croatian libraries report record reading participation and facility reopenings

In Koprivnica, the 'Reading Olympics' summer challenge concluded with a ceremony at the City Park. Organized by the 'Fran Galović' Library and Reading Room, the program saw record participation this year. A total of 246 students participated, with 218 being highly active, reading a combined 4,656 books. This achievement marks an increase from previous years, averaging 21 books per student over the summer period. Awards, including medals and diplomas, were presented to recognize outstanding readers and those who excelled in maintaining reading diaries and online engagement.

Meanwhile, in Osijek, the City and University Library (GISKO) has reopened its central building on Europska Avenue following energy renovation works. The project included installing new windows, upgrading heating systems with heat pumps, and addressing moisture issues in the basement. While the adult lending department and study reading room are operational as of September 14, the department for children and youth will open on October 1 following additional interior adjustments. Library director Dubravka Pađen-Farkaš noted that while the energy upgrades improve the facility, managing book storage remains a challenge due to a lack of dedicated depository space.
