Croatian lifestyle trends show increased daily movement but rising inactivity
Recent data from the Croatian Institute of Public Health (HZJZ), based on Eurobarometer results, reveals shifting physical activity patterns among Croatian citizens. While the percentage of people engaging in daily physical activity outside of formal sports has risen from 11% to 24% over the last four years, a concerning trend has emerged: the proportion of citizens who never engage in sports or exercise has increased from 40% in 2022 to 43% in 2026.
Daily movement is increasing, particularly among those walking to work, school, or shops, which rose from 23% to 37%. Additionally, more people are utilizing parks and outdoor spaces for activity, increasing from 23% to 31%. However, the number of people sitting for more than eight and a half hours a day remains unchanged at 12%.
The HZJZ noted that while certain forms of movement are increasing, they do not necessarily equate to a rise in structured sports participation.
