Croatian media committee proposes Dražen Miočić as HRT Director General

The Croatian Parliament's Committee for Information, Informatization, and Media has proposed journalist Dražen Miočić as the new Director General of the public broadcaster HRT. The proposal, put forward by the ruling HDZ party, received seven votes in favor and two abstentions.

Opposition representatives from the Možemo! and SDP parties walked out of the session in protest. They argued that the appointment process violates the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA), which aims to reduce political influence over public media leadership. Opposition members requested that the current competition be canceled and that an acting director be appointed until new legislation is passed to align HRT's governance with EU standards.

During the session, independent candidate Josip Jurčević suggested Fran Juraj Prižmić for the role, but the proposal was not adopted. Committee external member Teo Žeželj also expressed intent to file an objection, stating that the committee lacks the legal basis to make such a decision without complying with the European regulation.
