Croatian municipalities report rising cemetery waste costs
Municipalities in Croatia, specifically in the Međimurje region, are facing significant financial burdens due to the disposal of cemetery waste following All Saints Day. In Domašinec, the cost for waste removal from cemeteries in 2025 reached 7,600 euros, with 3,500 euros spent specifically in the period following the holiday. This expenditure exceeds the 3,000 euros collected from cemetery fees.
In Donji Kraljevec, the municipality spent 28,926 euros last year on waste disposal across three cemeteries. Local residents and officials have raised concerns regarding the excessive use of lanterns and the improper separation of waste, noting that the volume of discarded items is driving up municipal costs.
