Croatian nutrition experts name the healthiest cheeses
Nutrition analysts in Croatia explain that not all cheeses are equal for health. A modest daily portion of 30–45 g provides high‑quality protein, calcium and vitamin D‑facilitating fats, while the type of cheese determines its impact on blood pressure, cholesterol and blood‑sugar levels. Fermented, long‑aged varieties contain live cultures that support gut microbiota and immunity, and bioactive peptides that help relax blood‑vessel walls.
The experts highlight three cheeses with the strongest nutritional profile: Parmigiano Reggiano, whose extended aging raises calcium and vitamin K2 while reducing lactose; aged cheddar, noted for a low glycemic index and cardiovascular benefits; and Gouda made from grass‑fed cow milk, which contains higher omega‑3 fatty acids and other nutrients compared with conventional versions. They advise reading labels to avoid processed cheese slices and melted cheese products that lack these health advantages.
