Croatian Olympic Committee leadership contest draws Prime Minister's backing for Josip Varvodić

The election for president of the Croatian Olympic Committee (HOO), scheduled for 29 July 2026, has become a focal point of political maneuvering. Prime Minister Andrej Plenković is reported to be quietly supporting candidate Josip Varvodić, while rival Dragan Primorac, previously aligned with the ruling HDZ, also seeks the post. Major national sports federations—including football, handball, water polo, volleyball and basketball—have publicly backed Varvodić, suggesting a coordinated effort by the political and sporting establishment.

Varvodić met with the Croatian Chamber of Commerce (HGK) to present his program, emphasising stronger cooperation between sport and the economy. He highlighted initiatives such as tax incentives for business investment in sports clubs, development of sports‑economic diplomacy, and training for high‑level sports administrators. The HGK praised the proposal, noting sport’s contribution to local communities, tourism, employment and international promotion of Croatia.
