Croatian man arrested for smuggling over a tonne of protected sea urchins

Police on the A7 highway near the Rupa toll station stopped a kombi bearing Italian plates on the evening of 28 July. Inside the vehicle they discovered more than one tonne of black sea urchins (Arbacia lixula), a species protected under national and EU law, packed in plastic containers. The driver, a 35‑year‑old Croatian citizen, also had about 5.8 g of cannabis and presented a falsified international freight document.

The seized urchins were transferred to a patrol boat and released back into the Adriatic Sea off Opatija at a depth of roughly 50 metres. Marine biologist Petar Kružić warned that the organisms normally live at shallower depths and that most of them are likely to die. The driver has been placed in pre‑trial detention and charged with illegal trade of protected natural values, document forgery and traffic violations.

Authorities indicated the shipment was intended for sale in Italy, highlighting a growing problem of wildlife trafficking in the region.
