Croatian Tourist Spots See Empty Restaurants as Prices Surge

In the popular Croatian seaside town of Medulin, outdoor restaurant tables that were once full are now often empty. 2026 summer visitors report that menu items have become significantly more expensive, with calamari priced at about 230 NOK, tuna steak at 250 NOK, and a fish dish for two approaching 600 NOK. An analysis by Ipsos shows that the overall cost of a holiday in Croatia has risen roughly 79 % compared with previous years, driven by higher accommodation prices as well.

Croatia’s tourism minister Tonči Glavina noted that 3.1 million tourists visited the country in June, 7 % fewer than a year earlier, and overnight stays fell 6 % to 16 million. He said Norwegian travelers, who make up a sizable share of the market, are now more cautious with spending, contributing to the decline in restaurant patronage.

The price pressure is prompting many visitors to cut back on dining out, with family meals now often costing between 750 NOK and 1 300 NOK, prompting a shift toward more frugal holiday planning.
