Croatian War of Independence: veteran heroism and debate over cultural elite honors

During the final phase of the Croatian War of Independence, Croatian forces liberated the town of Knin, ending the self‑declared Serb entity and restoring Croatia’s territorial integrity. President Franjo Tuđman arrived at the Knin fortress shortly after the victory, symbolising national reunification.

At the same time, controversy surrounds the cultural elite’s wartime conduct. Actor Rade Šerbedžija, who left Croatia for the United States during the conflict, later received the prestigious Vladimir Nazor Award and other state privileges. Critics argue that his return was rewarded while many domestic artists and volunteers, such as singer‑actor Sven Lasta, who stayed and fought on the front lines, remain largely unacknowledged.
