Croatian wine industry faces stagflation and inventory pressure

The Croatian wine market is facing a phenomenon described as “wine stagflation,” where consumer demand is slowing or stagnating while production costs continue to rise. Factors such as increased prices for raw materials, energy, transport, and labor are driving up the cost per bottle, even as consumers shift away from expensive wines due to cautious spending habits.

In addition to rising costs, producers are struggling with high inventory levels. Cellars are currently full, and the lack of sales is preventing the release of storage capacity needed for new harvests. This creates significant pressure on producers to sell existing stock, which can lead to a drastic drop in grape prices. Some large wineries have already reported being unable to purchase significant quantities of grapes from long-term suppliers due to these capacity constraints.
