Croatia's Army Starts Second‑Generation Recruit Training as First Cohort Graduates

The first generation of Croatian Army recruits completed their two‑month basic military training in Požega, Knin and Slunj, graduating with a competition that named 19‑year‑old Helena Petrović from Slunj as the top female recruit and 23‑year‑old Damir Pastvečko from Kršinac as the top male recruit. Their training covered personal weapons handling, modern equipment such as drones, first‑aid provision and basic self‑defence.

Defense Minister Ivan Anušić announced that a second generation of recruits will begin training on 18 May, expanding the cohort to 900 participants, including 54 women, reflecting growing interest in military service. Of the 800 first‑generation recruits, 260 have expressed a desire to remain in the Armed Forces. Anušić also highlighted the forthcoming reconstruction of the barracks in Beli Manastir, with contract negotiations expected by year‑end and completion targeted for 2028, aiming to accommodate 500‑800 soldiers.

The events were presented as part of broader efforts to revitalize the Slavonia region, improve military staffing and modernise the Croatian defence infrastructure.
