Croatia's heated debate over war monuments and alleged Serbian genocide program

In late July 2026 two Croatian commentators published pieces on the significance of war monuments and burial sites. Don Ante Žderić argued that any desecration of memorials to victims of past ideological conflicts would not alter history, emphasizing respect for all fallen soldiers and civilians and warning that disrespect reflects poorly on the perpetrator.

Mile Pešorda focused on a monument in Srbu, describing it as a symbol of a Serbian‑led genocide program against Croatians during 1941. He cited historical research on Chetnik actions and called for acknowledgment of these crimes as part of a broader truth‑seeking process in Croatian society.
