Croatia's holiday traffic surge strains highways

Road authorities in Croatia have warned that the long weekend for the Catholic feast of Tijelovo on 19 June will cause a sharp rise in traffic on the main motorways, especially the A1, A3, A6 and A7 corridors and on approaches to major cities and border crossings. Ongoing road works have led to temporary lane reductions and detours, with some sections operating on a single lane in each direction. Drivers are urged to plan their journeys, follow posted signs and reduce speed where conditions require.

The Slovenian traffic safety agency also expects very heavy traffic volumes on Sunday, with large flows from Austria and Italy heading toward Croatia and the reverse direction later in the day. Congestion is likely on the Gorenjska, Štajerska and Primorska highways, the Ljubljana ring road and at mountain passes such as the Karavanke, Šentilj and Gruškovje. Motorists are advised to check vehicle condition, monitor road information services and follow emergency procedures if a breakdown occurs.
