Croatia's Liburnian festivals draw crowds in August

The 21st edition of Liburnicon, one of Croatia's largest fantasy and science‑fiction festivals, will take place on 21–22 August at the Faculty of Management in Tourism and Hospitality in Ika. The event’s theme, “Outlawed Edition,” explores pirates, outlaws, cowboys, werewolves and mythic heroes, and combines lectures, workshops, cosplay, concerts and family activities. Notable speakers include physicist Ivica Puljak, who will present popular‑science talks on antimatter, neutrinos and dark matter.

From 25–29 August, the 24th Liburnia Film Festival will be held in Opatija, showcasing 21 documentary films in competition, with ten world premieres. The program features a mix of local and international titles, ranging from intimate family stories to award‑winning documentaries, and includes talks with filmmakers, educational sessions for all ages and a public voting system to select audience favorites.
