Croatia's Plenković accuses SDP of attempting to block Constitutional Court
Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković has accused the Social Democratic Party (SDP) of attempting to block the functioning of the Constitutional Court rather than facilitating the election of new judges. The dispute follows the SDP's announcement of two candidates for the court, Goran Selanec and Ana Horvat Vuković, and their subsequent refusal to engage in closed-door negotiations with the ruling HDZ party.
Plenković argued that the SDP's strategy undermines national institutions and noted that the opposition lacks the two-thirds majority required to confirm their proposed candidates. Meanwhile, the SDP has shifted toward a policy of radical transparency, insisting that all future decisions regarding judicial appointments be conducted publicly to avoid the perception of the court acting as an extension of the ruling party.
