Croatia's Social Care Homes Overcrowded, Expansion Plans Announced

In 2025 the Sigurna Kuća shelter for victims of domestic violence in Međimurje housed 29 users but turned away 18 applicants – seven women and eleven children – because all beds were occupied. The centre, operating from a privately‑rented building constructed in 1967, also highlighted the need for a new facility to meet growing demand.

Meanwhile, the Poreč Home for the Elderly and Disabled reported that all 80 permanent beds were full throughout the year, with 132 new requests received and 23 additional residents admitted. To address the chronic shortage, the city is investing nearly €8 million in an expansion project that will add 35 new beds and raise total capacity to 120 by 2027. The investment, largely subsidised by the municipality, also introduces family‑style units to promote greater independence for residents.
