Croatia's Special Police Unit Alfa Marks 35th Anniversary

The Special Police Unit (SJP) “Alfa” in Zagreb celebrated its 35th founding anniversary at its Senjak headquarters. The ceremony began with wreath‑laying and candle‑lighting at Mirogoj Cemetery near the monument “Voice of the Croatian Victim – Wall of Pain” and the grave of former President Franjo Tuđman. Police Director Nikola Milina highlighted that 788 members of the unit have died defending the country.

After the cemetery tribute, the program continued with a formal formation of current and veteran Alfa members, a parachute jump in which the unit lowered the national flag, and its subsequent raising while the police choir “Sveti Mihovil” performed the anthem. The event also featured a display of the tactical‑technical squad and an exhibition of photographs titled “Alfa in the Homeland War”. Attendees included State Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior Tomislav Bilandžić, General Josip Lucić and Special Adviser to the Interior Minister General Mladen Markač.
