Croatia's Used Car Buyers: Reliability Risks and Top €20k Models

Experts in Croatia warn that a vehicle's mileage alone does not guarantee reliability. They stress the importance of a complete service history, documentation of major repairs, and the condition of key components such as the turbocharger, DPF filter, EGR valve, injectors, dual-mass flywheel, clutch, suspension and wheel bearings. After roughly 180,000–250,000 km, the likelihood of serious failures rises, and buyers should expect potential repair costs of several thousand euros if these parts have not been replaced.

Automotive specialist Roberto Mazzu also identified five used‑car models that can be purchased for under €20,000 and are known for durability and low running costs. The list includes the Mazda MX‑5 roadster, the compact all‑wheel‑drive Suzuki Jimny, the hybrid Toyota Corolla, the seventh‑generation Volkswagen Golf, and the 2020 Hyundai i10 N Line. These models are highlighted for their reliability, reasonable maintenance expenses, and good resale value.
