Crocodile incidents in Mexico trigger safety alerts

A 28‑year‑old tourist was attacked by a large crocodile on the beach in front of the Marriott hotel at Marina Vallarta, Puerto Vallarta, on June 26, 2026. The animal dragged the victim offshore before authorities from the Mexican Navy, civil protection and local fire services launched a sea and land search. The crocodile was later recaptured and the victim’s body was recovered the following morning.

Separately, the crocodile known locally as “Mali” reappeared in Laguna Malibrán in the Floresta subdivision of Veracruz. Environmentalists and officials warned residents and visitors to stay out of the lagoon, noting previous rescues of people who entered the water. The animal, a Morelet’s crocodile, is believed to have been released as a juvenile. Authorities say capture is difficult and focus on public education and signage instead of relocation.
