Crocodile kills tourist on beach in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

A 28‑year‑old tourist was attacked and dragged into the sea by a crocodile on Marina Vallarta Beach, near the Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort, on the evening of 26 June 2026. The victim, identified as Irving Mauricio from Mexico City, was engaged in recreational activities when the animal seized him. His body was recovered the following day about 500 metres offshore, and the crocodile was captured nearby.

State authorities described the incident as an isolated and unusual event, noting that crocodile attacks in the area are rare. In response, officials increased surveillance of high‑risk zones, reinforced signage warning of wildlife hazards, and urged visitors to avoid swimming at dawn, dusk, or night. The Marriott resort confirmed it has warning signs, night patrols and red‑flag indicators for beach safety. Previous crocodile incidents in the region occurred in 2021 and 2022, involving injured tourists but no fatalities.
