Cronos blockchain halts after $75M Tectonic protocol exploit

The Cronos blockchain halted block production on August 30, 2026, following a major exploit of Tectonic, its largest decentralized lending protocol. The attack involved a price manipulation of Tectonic’s governance token, TONIC, which was reportedly pumped nearly 100-fold within a 20-minute window due to thin market liquidity. The attacker used the artificially inflated TONIC as collateral to borrow significant amounts of other liquid assets.

Preliminary estimates suggest the exploit affected approximately $75 million in assets. On-chain researchers noted that while about $6 million was successfully bridged to the Ethereum network before the shutdown, a large portion of the remaining funds remained stranded on the Cronos network due to the emergency halt. Tectonic’s total value locked (TVL) plummeted from roughly $121.7 million to approximately $3 million following the incident.

Validators coordinated the emergency halt to prevent further asset outflows, and the network has since resumed operations by restoring the state to a point prior to the exploit. Crypto.com, which supports the Cronos ecosystem, stated that its centralized exchange and mobile app were unaffected and remain operational. Neither Cronos nor Tectonic has officially confirmed the final loss figures or a definitive timeline for full recovery and user compensation.
