Cross-border pension claims and social security coordination
Individuals who have worked in multiple countries, such as Austria, Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, or Croatia, can claim pension benefits based on their accumulated insurance periods in each nation. While insurance periods are recognized across borders, countries do not provide a single unified pension. Instead, each state evaluates claims according to its own regulations and pays out benefits for the specific periods worked within its jurisdiction.
In Austria, pension claims with Croatia are coordinated through EU law, while agreements with Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina govern social security coordination. Similarly, Serbia maintains over 30 international social security agreements to regulate pension rights with other nations.
Crucially, pension eligibility is determined by where insurance was acquired rather than citizenship. To ensure all periods are accounted for, individuals must often provide proof of foreign employment to their domestic pension funds, as national institutions typically maintain separate records of service.
