Cross-education effects on distal radius fracture recovery
A systematic literature review investigated the effects of cross-education—unilateral strength training with contralateral effects—on strength and range of motion during and after the immobilization of distal radius fractures.
Based on a search of the PubMed database conducted between May and September 2025, the study analyzed four randomized controlled trials involving 225 patients and one review involving 84 patients. Interventions studied included various contraction patterns of wrist flexors and extensors, tempo-regulated strength training, visuomotor skill training, progressive strength training, and concentric contraction of elbow flexors.
The results were mixed: two of the four studies reported a significant increase in strength, while the other two reported a significant decrease. None of the studies reached a definitive conclusion regarding strength gains.
