Cross River State reinstates 4,000 local government workers

Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu has approved the reinstatement of approximately 4,000 local government workers to the state payroll. This decision follows discussions with leaders from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP).

Labour leaders had appealed for the reconsideration of the workers' removal, noting that many had been in service for roughly two years. Governor Otu stated that the administration recognized the hardship caused by the sudden loss of income, noting that “to cut them off at short notice will be too much to absorb.”

The Governor clarified that the initial removals were part of public service reforms intended to correct irregularities and ensure employment is based on qualifications and fairness. He emphasized a commitment to rebuilding a public service characterized by productivity and accountability.
