Cross River State revives newspaper corporation and printing press
Cross River State Governor Bassey Edet Otu has officially reactivated the state's newspaper corporation, now renamed the Cross River Information Hub, and commissioned a new Government Printing Press in Calabar. The facility, which includes the refurbished Nigerian Chronicle premises, was previously destroyed during the 2020 EndSARS crisis.
Federal Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris commended the move, describing it as an investment in democracy and institutional memory. He noted that the corporation, originally established in 1971, serves as a vital tool for effective communication between the government and the public.
During the ceremony, veteran journalists and former governors Clement Ebri and Ray Ekpu emphasized the importance of responsible journalism and the loss of historical records due to the previous destruction of the newspaper's archives. Governor Otu pledged to rebuild the library to reclaim lost history and urged journalists to provide accurate reporting on government infrastructure projects.
