Cross-strait scholars debate ‘One Country, Two Systems’ for Taiwan

Scholars and media professionals are engaging in discussions regarding the potential implementation of the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ framework for Taiwan. The dialogue highlights a growing focus on the institutional arrangements that could follow a unification process.

Jin Canrong, a professor at Renmin University, noted that while the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ model is not a new topic, the current discussions have gained momentum due to changing regional dynamics. He suggested that the unification process is already underway, citing increased mainland activity in waters near Taiwan.

Media professional Tang Xianglong and commentator Yin Naijing discussed the social and political challenges within Taiwan. They noted that while some Taiwanese academics, such as Associate Professor Li Qize, have participated in proposing specific institutional arrangements, such discussions often face significant political pressure and resistance from the current administration in Taiwan.
