CrossCountry rail services face major disruption after Birmingham power cut

A power outage at the CrossCountry control centre in Birmingham caused widespread disruption to rail services across the United Kingdom on Sunday, August 23. The outage rendered many management systems unavailable, leading to the cancellation of almost all CrossCountry routes, including major connections between Glasgow and Edinburgh, Manchester and Birmingham, and Newcastle and Edinburgh.

While most services were suspended, a near-normal timetable was maintained on the route between Peterborough, Cambridge, and Stansted Airport. Other train operators, including Chiltern Railways and London North Eastern Railway, implemented ticket acceptance to assist affected passengers.

CrossCountry announced that most facilities have been reinstated. The operator plans to run a very limited number of services on Sunday evening, primarily toward Leicester and Derby, with a full service expected to resume on Monday, August 24. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander noted that Network Rail power teams were deployed to assist in restoring systems. Passengers affected by delays of 30 minutes or more may be eligible for Delay Repay compensation.
