Crotone lifeguard honored for life-saving emergency rescue

Massimo Cosco, a 27-year-old lifeguard at the Fruit Hotel Casarossa, successfully rescued a man who suffered a severe medical emergency on a beach in Crotone on August 12, 2026. After being alerted by bystanders, Cosco brought the man out of the water and performed chest compressions when he found the individual had no pulse. Cosco also coordinated with others to secure a defibrillator and summon emergency services. The man eventually regained breathing and was handed over to medical personnel.

On August 25, Crotone Mayor Vincenzo Voce officially received Cosco at the municipal building to express the administration's and community's gratitude. Romano Pesavento, president of the National Coordination of Teachers of Human Rights, praised the mayor's decision to publicly recognize the young man, noting that such institutional recognition serves an educational purpose by providing new generations with concrete examples of responsible citizenship.
