Crotone residents denounce severe decay in Piazza Mercato

Residents and business owners in Crotone are denouncing the worsening state of decay in Piazza Mercato, one of the city’s most historic and central urban spaces. The area is suffering from significant infrastructure issues, including damaged and uneven pavement, broken public lighting, and rusted, dangerous canopies that pose risks during high winds.

Sanitation has become a primary concern. Locals report excessive waste accumulation and unsanitary conditions in areas like Vico Peschi, where pigeon droppings and greasy, black streets have made walking difficult. Business owners claim they are often forced to clean the areas in front of their shops themselves, as municipal services have failed to provide adequate maintenance or hydro-cleaning.

Critics highlight a perceived lack of political will, noting that while the square is frequently used as a backdrop for political rallies, no concrete revitalization projects have been implemented. Despite various administrations proposing improvements over the years, the square remains in a state of stagnation.
