Crotone residents targeted by WhatsApp impersonation scams

Cybercriminals in Crotone and its surrounding province are utilizing WhatsApp and phone calls to execute sophisticated fraud schemes. These scams rely on impersonating trusted individuals, such as family members or friends, to manipulate victims into sending money via bank transfers.

In some instances, attackers gain control of an existing WhatsApp account or access to linked devices. In others, they use different numbers but adopt the name, profile picture, and personal details of a known contact to build credibility.
