Italy commemorates Judge Rosario Livatino 36 years after mafia assassination

Italy is observing the 36th anniversary of the assassination of Judge Rosario Livatino, who was killed by the Stidda mafia group on September 21, 1990. Livatino, a magistrate known for his integrity and faith, was targeted while driving from Canicattì to the Agrigento court. His death has led to his recognition as a Blessed by the Catholic Church, having been killed ‘in odium fidei’.

National leaders, including Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, have issued tributes honoring his courage and commitment to the rule of law. Commemorative ceremonies are being held across various locations, including Villa San Giovanni, to promote reflection on legality and justice among younger generations.

In a separate act of remembrance in Crotone, the main hall of the Ciliberto-Lucifero Institute has been dedicated to Domenico ‘Dodò’ Gabriele, an 11-year-old boy killed by the ’ndrangheta in 2009. The dedication serves as a permanent space for civil engagement and memory of the tragedy.
