Crown Castle expects AI to drive mobile data and tower demand

Crown Castle executive Sunit Patel stated that artificial intelligence is expected to be a “clear positive” for mobile data demand, potentially driving increased network investment and tower activity. Patel noted that AI applications could shift the traditional mobile traffic mix, which has historically been roughly 80% download and 20% upload, toward a more balanced 60% download and 40% upload ratio.

Rising data volumes from AI may require larger antenna and radio installations, potentially increasing the space mobile network operators occupy on Crown Castle’s 40,000 towers. The company is also focusing on edge computing applications below one megawatt of power, leveraging its existing fiber and power connections at tower sites to lease space to new tenants.
