Crown Heights residents protest barricades ahead of West Indian Day Parade

The annual West Indian Day Parade and Labor Day festivities in Crown Heights will result in significant street closures and an increased police presence. Closures are scheduled to begin Sunday night, September 6, through Monday evening, September 7, affecting major routes including Flatbush Avenue, Empire Boulevard, and Nostrand Avenue.

Residents have expressed frustration regarding an increase in steel barricades deployed by the NYPD. Local community members reported that the additional security layers have hindered access to cars, blocked fire hydrants, and created difficulties for elderly and disabled neighbors attempting to reach their homes. While police officials state the extra barriers provide more time to react to potential security threats, residents have questioned the early implementation of these measures.

The NYPD plans to deploy over 2,000 officers to the area to manage the crowds and ensure safety during the festivities. Drivers attempting to enter the neighborhood between Montgomery Street and President Street will be required to show identification verifying a local address.
