Crown Prince Haakon and Mette-Marit mark 25th anniversary privately

Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway are marking their 25th wedding anniversary with a private celebration following a period of significant family challenges. The Norwegian Royal House released a new portrait of the couple to commemorate their silver wedding anniversary, which took place on August 25, 2026.

The decision to forgo large-scale public festivities is due to ongoing health concerns within the royal family. Crown Princess Mette-Marit is currently recovering from a lung transplant performed in June to treat chronic pulmonary fibrosis. Additionally, King Harald V, 89, remains hospitalized at Oslo University Hospital due to a bacterial infection in his bloodstream.

In light of the King's condition, the Crown Prince and Princess spent part of their anniversary visiting him at the hospital. The royal family has emphasized a theme of unity and togetherness during this difficult time, noting that the couple has remained steadfast through recent personal and health-related crises.
