Hape Kerkeling royal impersonation 1991 prank Queen Beatrix Bellevue Palace

In 1991 German comedian Hape Kerkeling dressed as Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands and drove a limousine to Berlin’s Bellevue Palace during the monarch’s official state visit with Prince Claus. He succeeded in passing the security checkpoint and reached the palace entrance before security personnel realized the deception and escorted him off the grounds.

The episode is revisited in the ARD documentary “Hape Kerkeling – Total normal”. Kerkeling later recalled panicking about the possibility of arrest. Contemporary reactions were mixed: German newspapers were largely critical, while Dutch media reported amusement. A former German president later expressed a conciliatory attitude toward the stunt.
