Ingrid Alexandra becomes Norway's Crown Princess and first female heir

Following the death of King Harald V, Norway has entered a new monarchical era. King Haakon VIII has officially taken his oath to the Constitution before the Storting, the Norwegian Parliament. His 22-year-old daughter, Ingrid Alexandra, has also made history by becoming the Crown Princess and the first female heir to the throne in over 600 years.

As part of her new role, Ingrid Alexandra has signed a written oath, granting her the authority to act as Regent should the King be unable to perform his duties. This transition marks a significant shift in her personal life; she has reportedly interrupted her social science studies in Sydney, Australia, to return to Norway and fulfill her increasing royal responsibilities.

Observers and royal experts have noted her dignified presence during official ceremonies, where she wore attire that paid homage to royal traditions, including a look reminiscent of Queen Sonja’s appearance during the 1991 proclamation of King Harald V. The transition follows the 1990 change in succession laws, which established absolute primogeniture, ensuring the eldest child inherits regardless of gender.
